Skills Lab Facilities
With state-of-the-art technology and specially-designed spaces, the Skills Lab offers dynamic classes in an innovative learning environment. The facilities include a simulated community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, three hospital bays with high fidelity mannequins and eight ambulatory care examining rooms for consultations with standardized patients. Compounding facilities comprise spaces for non-sterile and sterile compounding, including a 797-compliant clean room.
Classroom and Alcoves
Skills Lab’s 45-seat classroom is encircled by eight ambulatory care examining rooms (alcoves) for consultations with standardized patients. Video and audio technology in these spaces record sessions to allow for review and coaching of clinical and interpersonal skills.
Community Pharmacy
The simulation spaces include a community pharmacy equipped with specialized software, Kirby Lester â„¢ devices for tablet counting, and automated electronic dispensers to facilitate fulfillment of high-frequency medications.
Hospital Pharmacy
The hospital pharmacy simulation space provides students with a realistic setting in which to perform tasks such as processing provider orders for patient medications and confirming the correct medication and dosage for each patient. The hospital pharmacy includes a simulated 797 clean room in which students practice sterile compounding methods such as IV production in one of several laminar flow workstations. A separate ante-room allows a location for garbing of personal protective equipment before entering the clean room environment.
Hospital Bays
Each of the three simulated hospital bays are equipped with a hospital bed and equipment to create a realistic environment where students interact with members of the interprofessional healthcare team. The Skills Lab has four high-fidelity mannequins used in simulations for practice performing basic physical exams, observing vital sign changes and recommending pharmacologic treatment. Video cameras and discrete microphones allow simulations to be shared in real-time for observation and debrief purposes.
Home Care Space
This flexible activity space includes seating for 22 individuals and opportunities to simulate sessions in a home environment.
Compounding Classroom
Both sterile and non-sterile compounding methods are practiced by students in the Compounding Lab spaces. In these spaces, students learn to create and verify patient specific medications. There is a 797 sterile compounding room with hoods to practice sterile compounding. In addition, students have individual lab stations to perfect creating ointments, solutions, suspensions, and many other dosage forms. The environment is set up to create a student-friendly hands-on approach to learning.
