The Kaschak Institute is committed to raising awareness about the impact of climate change in communities of color. Last June we participated in an important conference organized by the on climate change and its impact on Black communities. With a focus on science, systemic inequalities, and solutions. The Kaschak Institute was pleased to co-sponsor the event along with the Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity and Provost Donald Hall.
The Summit convened leaders, policymakers, academics, students and advocates to construct a new front in the movement to address the climate crisis in the United States. The Summit looked at the racialized impacts of climate change and highlighted how Black American communities are key agents of change in the fight for a sustainable future.
The objectives of this event included:
- Consolidating and highlighting knowledge from the African-American community about climate change, including its disparate and racialized impacts in the U.S.
- Raising public awareness about the racialized impacts of climate change and centering Black voices in the environmental movement
- Facilitating cross-sector collaboration and direct action to address the impact of climate change on Black communities
