Living/Learning

Each fall, we offer a UNIV 101 course with priority going to Mountainview students and taught in Mountainview:

Festivals, Fans, and Jam Bands

This course will examine Woodstock and other rock festivals from a variety of perspectives, tracing the legacy of music festival culture through Grateful Dead concerts and up to modern-day jam bands and rock festivals. We will explore the music of bands such as the Dead, Allman Brothers, Cream, Phish, Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, Umphrey's McGee, and more, considering such issues as each band's approach to studio recordings vs. live recordings, favorite performance venues, and how each band relates to its fans. Students will develop presentations and short papers on the culture and music of the contemporary jam band/festival scene. For a final project, students will help stage a music festival to be held on campus toward the end of the semester.

Mountainview has three learning communities:

Romance Languages Learning Community

Mountainview鈥檚 Romance Languages Learning Community (RLLC) provides an academic, cultural, and social residential experience for students with an interest in French, Italian and/or Spanish as well as the cultures and countries associated with those languages.

RLLC residents participate in a variety of activities designed for and with them, including cooking nights, movie nights, music nights, holiday celebrations, international game nights and also weekly conversation tables with faculty and students from the Romance Languages Department. RLLC members have the opportunity to interact closely with many faculty in Romance Languages, building ties with them and with each other, while exploring their shared passion for languages and culture. Residents are encouraged to speak French, Italian and/or Spanish on the floor as much as they like and as their abilities allow.

First-year RLLC members take a 1-credit course designed around the community's events and activities in the fall.

The RLLC warmly welcomes students of all levels of French, Italian and/or Spanish, as well as native or heritage speakers. You don鈥檛 have to be fluent in a Romance language and you don鈥檛 have to be a language major or minor! You just have to be excited about exploring the French/Italian/Spanish languages and the cultures associated with them.

Engineering Learning Community

The Watson Engineering Learning COMmunity (WELCOM) is an opportunity for those first-year engineering students passionate about working as an engineer in an equitable and just world. This is a community striving to create a world where there is both representation in the designers as well as equity and justice inherent in the products created.

The WELCOM students will be introduced to the principles of inclusion through a one-credit seminar course each semester as well as focused residential programming. Examples of activities include field trips to local points of interest, participation of a DEI focused programming, focused academic support services, invited speakers and social events to support community building.

This learning community is designed to foster a sense of shared purpose with other
students and their teachers. Students will have more opportunities to interact with
a range of people. Students who are accepted into WELCOM live together in
Cascade Hall in Mountainview. While their roommate will most likely be a part of
the Engineering Community, the floor on which they will live will be a combination
of students from other majors as well. Students who are accepted into WELCOM
will be assigned by Residential Life and do not participate in room selection.
Residential Life assignments are made for one year.

How to sign up

Participation in WELCOM is limited to first-year engineering students in the Watson
College. To apply please complete this . For additional information contact Koen Gieskes.

Nursing Learning Community (NLC)

The Nursing Learning Community (NLC) is an on-campus residential option for students who have been directly admitted into the nursing program at the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Students in this community live in close proximity to one another in Mountainview鈥檚 Hunter Hall. A variety of academic and social activities designed specifically for nursing students are offered throughout the year. Members of the NLC often take nursing prerequisite courses together and have the opportunity to form study groups. The Mountainview Residential Life Team and Decker College's Division of Advising and Academic Excellence provide activities, support and guidance designed specifically for first-year nursing students who live in the NLC. Additionally, the NLC study lounge is ideally suited to support the educational needs of first-year nursing students.

Incoming first-year nursing students are strongly encouraged to live in the NLC, but please note that space is limited. Students wishing to opt out of living in the NLC must contact Decker鈥檚 Division of Advising and Academic Excellence at 607-777-4954 or decker@binghamton.edu by May 30.
