Career Development Checklist
1. Have your resume reviewed
- Schedule an appointment with the Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development; some appointments are available at the Health Sciences Building.
- Explore the Decker Student, Career and Alumni Connections event calendar for Fleishman hours and employer visits; employers often offer r茅sum茅 reviews/mock interviews during these events.
2. Schedule a mock interview
- Visit the Decker Student, Career and Alumni Connections event calendar to see if there are any employer visits with available appointments.
- 绿帽社 provides access to which is a mock interviewing resource.
- Employers will often offer mock interviews. If not, Fleishman also offers mock interviews.
3. Complete a professional headshot
- The Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development has an where you can get a free professional headshot in minutes.
- Use a professional headshot for your LinkedIn account.
4. Create a LinkedIn account
- Marketing yourself is important!
- We also recommend changing other social media accounts to private.
5. Create a professional email account:
- Use your first and last name for your email. Example: Jane.Smith@gmail.com
- Update your voicemail to include your full name. Example: "Hello, this is Jane Smith, I can't come to the phone right now, please leave a message."
Tips and Tricks for applying
- Use a plain background if interviewing on Zoom.
- Research the potential employer to show your interest.
- If you are expecting a call, answer your phone with your full name "Hello, this is Jane Smith."
- Prepare to ask during your interview. The interviewer may answer some of them during the interview; be prepared with more questions.

- Long Island Community Hospital: Nurse Externship
In this role, the successful candidate performs patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by the professional registered nurse. Works closely with the professional nurse to determine patient needs implements care activities and reports patient/family responses. Carries out patient assignments under the direct supervision of the registered nurse with a comprehensive approach to achieve specific outcomes. Reports to the RN specific functions completed Observes the RN in the performance of professional nursing care.
- To qualify you must have a Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a nursing program
- Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
- 2025 Student Nurse Externship Program: All Hospitals
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
Enrolled as a junior in a BSN program and has completed a fundamental of nursing course with a clinical practicum, required. - Graduation date between December 2025- August 2026.
- Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association
- Must be available for the entirety of the 8-week program, from June 5 through August 1.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
- White Plains Hospital Nurse Associate Program
2025 WPH Nurse Associate Program.
- A paid position
- 10 weeks long
- Begins on June 5, 2025, consisting of two days of NT training, 8 weeks operating as a Nursing Technician, and then the final 2 weeks shadowing a Nurse! Students must be able to commit to the full 10 week program (ending on August 16, 2025).
- Applications are now being accepted and positions will be filled on a rolling basis.
Qualifications:
- Open to College Juniors in a BSN program entering their Senior year
- Min GPA requirement: 3.2 GPA
- Must have a current BLS Card through the American Heart Association

- NY Presbyterian: White Plains, NY Nurse Externship in Behavioral Health
This is a full-time, nine-week program from June 2025 - August 2025 on a rotating schedule of day and evening, Monday through Friday (7:00 am - 11:30 pm) including weekend (Sat+ Sun) shifts at our NewYork - Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health.
Preferred Criteria:
- Interest in pursuing behavioral health nursing
Required Criteria
- A matriculated student in a baccalaureate nursing program who is within two semesters of completing the degree requirements
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
- United Health Services Summer Nurse Extern
The Summer Nurse Extern program provides an opportunity for current nursing students, between their junior and senior year of nursing school, to receive training through clinical experience.
This is a temporary position, available in summer only, at a flat rate of $20.00/hr., with the ability to apply for a permanent position upon completion of the externship: Full-Time, Part-Time, or Per-Diem Nursing Assistant positions are available prior to exploring our Nurse Residency Program.
As an Extern, you will perform patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by the professional Registered Nurse. All tasks performed in this role will occur under the direction and supervision of a precepting UHS Registered Nurse.

- Crouse Student Nurse Assistant Program
Crouse鈥檚 Student Nurse Resource Pool is hiring per diem Student Nurse Assistants (SNAs). This is an opportunity for nursing students to develop their clinical abilities and expertise, gain exposure to the professional healthcare environment, and improve their communication, time management, and prioritization skills.
Student Nurse Assistants work in a variety of patient care areas including: General Med/Surg, Cardiac/Tele, Oncology, Post-Op, Neuroscience, Orthopedics, Bariatrics, Recovery Care Center, Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, and Antepartum/Post-partum.

- 2025-26 Hematology/Oncology AAP Fellowship (Rochester, NY)
Applications are open for the 2025-2026 Hematology/Oncology APP Fellowship at the Wilmot Cancer Institute in Rochester, NY.
A1-year post-graduate fellowship program aimed at NPs and PAs who have a special interest in hematology/oncology and wish to work at the University of Rochester Medical Center's Wilmot Cancer Institute. The year includes rotations in several of our subspecialities, varied and also tailored to the individual fellow's interests.
Deadline: March 7, 2025 - UC San Diego School of Medicine Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program
UCSD Department of Psychiatry is offering a 12-month post-graduate Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) with two specialty tracks (General Adult & Child and Adolescent).
The programs are for newly graduated Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners who wish to seek additional training and supervision primarily in community psychiatry settings in their first year of practice. Participants will gain experience in a variety of settings including consult-liaison, community mental health, emergency department, outpatient, urgent care, and specialty clinics.

- Professional Nurses Association of South Central New York Nursing Student Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to individuals who demonstrate desire and ability as well as exhibit evidence of commitment to the profession of nursing.
Qualifications:
- Resident of Broome or Tioga County
- SAT verbal and math score of 850 or higher or ACT reading math score or 13 or higher. Or Upper 1/3 of high school class. Or 3.5 GPA (highschool)
- Accepted/enrolled in a BS Nursing Program for Fall 2025
- Demonstrates leadership role in school or community settings

- The New York State Emergency Nurses Association Annual Pace Conference
The NYS ENA is a non-profit state council of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). As a nationally chartered organization, NYSENA represents the interest of emergency nurses and their patients in the state of New York. New York holds the distinction of being the very first charter site of the national organization.
The state council represents over two thousand emergency nurses interested in promoting improved emergency care throughout NYS. The dedicated efforts of its members in the area of public safety, continuing education, nursing research, and promotion of the profession serve to maintain quality of patient care and have a positive influence in the state.

- Senator Patricia K. McGee Nursing Faculty Scholarship
Up to $20,000 per year for registered nurses licensed in NYS pursuing a graduate degree that leads to a career of nursing or adjunct clinical faculty.
Requirements:
- Receive up to $20,000 per year.
- Enroll in a graduate degree program that qualifies you to work as nursing faculty or adjunct clinical faculty in NYS.
- GPA of 3.0 or higher if you already completed a semester in a graduate program that will qualify you as nursing or adjunct clinical faculty.
- Live in NYS and work as nursing faculty or adjunct faculty for four years.

- Healthcare Workers for Our Future Scholarship
The 鈥淗ealthcare Workers for Our Future鈥 Scholarship provides a two-year scholarship to approximately 500 selected recipients covering tuition, room and board, and other related expenses in an approved program of study at any approved New York state public or private college or university.
Individuals seeking to pursue a degree in the following fields of study are eligible to apply: Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Radiologic Technology and Surgical Technology.
