Mission Statement
The mission of Lyceum is to provide the most comprehensive and high-quality educational programming and enriching experiences possible with a particular focus on the needs and interests of curious lifelong learners, mindful of the need for social interaction.
Vision Statement
The vision of Lyceum, as an organization, is to grow both locally and by using technology to reach out to a broader population, while also using that technology to enhance and offer new programming and enriching experiences from around the globe.
Lyceum is a life-long learning institute (LLI) for adult learners. We offer creative, intellectually enriching courses on a wide variety of topics to residents of the Southern Tier and beyond. Our program will stimulate your intellectual curiosity and expand your connections in our community.
The Program
Lyceum's curriculum of over 120 courses per year includes university-level liberal arts style courses in such fields as literature, history, arts, anthropology, political science, and science as well as practical courses on subjects like health, personal safety, gardening, environmental conservation, and food.
Volunteer course leaders come from university faculty, retired specialists, Lyceum members who have pursued and interest in depth, or knowledgeable community members. Most classes are offered simultaneously in our classroom at WSKG studio in Vestal and online via Zoom. Our online platform helps residents who cannot attend in person be involved and those who move away stay connected. We welcome adult participants from across the United States.
Building A Connected Community
Lyceum also offers excursions, dinners, discounted attendance to local concerts and theater productions, and special events to our members. As members participate in lively class discussions and join in on social activities, they find new friends and become part of the Lyceum community. We encourage members to help keep Lyceum a participatory organization by volunteering for committees, sharing in policy making, proposing courses, and assisting at class meetings
