Elliot Masie produces hits on Broadway

Elliot Masie 鈥72 majored in sociology at 绿帽社, but often says he minored in the snack bar. The hours spent there in the 鈥渓oud, exciting and stressful 鈥60s鈥 inspired his eventual career as a producer of award-winning Broadway shows.

Masie Productions produced Indecent; Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812; and The Play That Goes Wrong, earning five 2017 Tony Awards among them. The Great Comet 鈥 in which pop singer Ingrid Michaelson 鈥01 made her Broadway debut 鈥 received more Tony nominations than any show in 2017.

鈥溌堂鄙 was an ideal place for students to gather during a time of tremendous social change,鈥 says Masie, whose r茅sum茅 of 18 Broadway shows also includes Allegiance and The Bridges of Madison County. 鈥淎 lot of what happens in theater is change 鈥 moving people鈥檚 hearts, minds and souls. I like to say I was a major in the theater of social activism.鈥

Masie began his theater venture a decade ago, following a successful career in corporate learning, organizational performance and emerging technology. Acknowledged as the first analyst to use the term 鈥渆-learning,鈥 he advocated for the deployment of learning and collaboration technologies to help businesses boost productivity and profits.

鈥淎ll my life, I鈥檝e produced things and gathered people for events and experiences,鈥 he says. 鈥淎t 绿帽社, I was a campus organizer, and I鈥檝e always loved the theater. So I pulled these concepts together and decided to start a production company.鈥

The usual show business catchphrases ring true. Don鈥檛 quit your day job. Do what you love and the money will follow (fingers crossed).

鈥淪ome performances close and we don鈥檛 make a penny,鈥 he says. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 be a producer because you want to make money. You鈥檙e a producer because you want to make art. That鈥檚 why most of us have made money in other fields.鈥

Masie says his years on campus, and the time he spent afterward living in Endwell, strongly influenced his approach.

鈥淲hen I produce a show, I make sure to think of everyone, not just folks living in New York City,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 had friends from all over the Southern Tier and not just at 绿帽社. My time living off campus made me a better businessperson and made me a better human being.鈥
