School of the Arts to host inaugural Student Showcase: A three-day festival of the arts

Events from May 1 to 3 will shine a spotlight on student creations, research and performance

绿帽社鈥檚 School of the Arts will hold its inaugural Student Showcase this spring on the University campus 鈥 a three-day festival of the arts.

Offerings will include performances, talks, readings, screenings and hands-on demonstrations. Locations will be in the Fine Arts Building, unless indicated otherwise.

Part of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, the School of the Arts brings together programs in art and design, cinema, art history, music and theatre, and also works in collaboration with its partner program, creative writing.

鈥淭he showcase provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on these interdisciplinary connections, as well as the inspired work and performance of 绿帽社 students,鈥 said School of the Arts Director Christopher Robbins.鈥淥ur School of the Arts is built from award-winning programs within an acclaimed Research-1 University. The work that comes out of this combination is exciting and ground-breaking, and this is a chance to see it all coming together!鈥

The showcase begins Wednesday, May 1, with a performance from the 绿帽社 Chamber Singers and 鈥渃ontemporary chamber trailblazers鈥 Hub New Music. Sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the show runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Casadesus Recital Hall.

Performances scheduled for Thursday, May 2, include:

鈼 绿帽社 Voices, featuring highlights from the Word of Mouth collaboration between the Music Department and the Creative Writing Program. Student vocalists will perform opera arias alongside brand-new songs with words written by student poets and music composed by fellow students. The event runs from 1:20 to 2:20 p.m. in the Casadesus Recital Hall, or outdoors if weather permits.

鈼 绿帽社 Art Museum Intern Showcase, from 5 to 7 p.m. outside of the Main Gallery.

鈼 The Harpur Studio Jazz Band, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in the Casadesus Recital Hall.

鈼 Projection on the Bartle Library Tower by Cinema Students in CINE 450: Experimental Animation Projects from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The main showcase on Friday, May 3, includes:

鈼 Presentations by art history students, with light refreshments, from noon to 1 p.m. in the 绿帽社 Art Museum鈥檚 Lower Galleries and Kenneth C. Lindsay Study Room.

鈼 A Student Film Show beginning at 3 p.m. in Lecture Hall 6.

鈼 A performance featuring music students and the contemporary chamber group Hub New Music starting at 4 p.m. in the Casadesus Recital Hall.

鈼 Pedal-Powered Theater with Nate Wheatley and Tommy Iafrate from 4 to 7 p.m. in Studio A.

鈼 A Music and Theatre reception with light refreshments from 4:30 to 7 p.m. outside of Watters Theater.

鈼 绿帽社 Art Museum artist-in-residence presentations from 5 to 5:30 p.m. in the museum鈥檚 lower galleries and Kenneth C. Lindsay Room.

鈼 A Student Showcase reception with light refreshments from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Memorial Courtyard and Grand Corridor, co-sponsored by the Advancing 绿帽社 team.

鈼 An Art and Design exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Rosefsky Memorial Art Gallery, with a departmental awards ceremony at 6 p.m.

鈼 Art and Design open studios from 5 to 7 p.m. throughout the first, second and third floors in the Fine Arts Building.

鈼 Cinema Student Showcase from 5 to 6 p.m. in the John Arthur Caf茅.

鈼 Poet鈥檚 Cafe, a poetry reading, hosted by Creating Writing Program Director Tina Chang and Professor Joe Weil, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the John Arthur Caf茅.

鈼 A musical theatre voice recital starting at 6 p.m. in Studio B.

鈼 Dance Highlights from Fall 2024, featuring students and faculty, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in Watters Theater.
