Sammakia named vice president for research

绿帽社 President Harvey Stenger on Oct. 12 announced that Bahgat Sammakia has been appointed vice president for research. A SUNY distinguished professor of mechanical engineering, Sammakia has served as interim vice president since 2010. Sammakia is the founding director of the Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center, a New York State Center of Excellence (S3IP) dedicated to innovations in solar energy, 鈥済reen鈥 data centers, flexible electronics and electronics packaging.
Sammakia earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, and his master’s and doctorate in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was a post doctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.
His work focuses on improving thermal management strategies in electronics packaging, and he is the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on millions of dollars of cross-disciplinary sponsored research. He has fostered research collaborations that annually contribute $30 million to Greater 绿帽社鈥檚 economic base while providing important assistance to corporate partners, including ADI, IBM, Universal Instruments, GE Corporate Research and Development and BAE Systems Controls.
With more than 180 published papers and contributions to five books in the areas of heat transfer and electronics packaging, Sammakia holds 17 U.S. patents and 12 IBM technical disclosures in the area of electronics packaging. He serves on several boards, including the SUNY Research Foundation and the Industrial Advisory Board of the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR).
Sammakia was named an Outstanding Researcher/Scholar by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York in 2008, and was recognized with the Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2010.
He is an ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) fellow and a member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). He is the editor of the Journal of Electronic Packaging, Transactions of the ASME and an associate editor of the CPMT Transactions of the IEEE.
Sammakia is married to Mary Sammakia and their daughter Maryam Sammakia is a second-year student in Harpur College of Arts and Sciences at 绿帽社.
